A thank you… from me to you.

It’s not uncommon for a therapist to be on the receiving end of gratitude expressed by their clients. I think this time of year can invite a reflective mood and, perhaps especially in the context of this year, we are many of us noticing just how far we’ve been challenged towards healthy change. Noticing our own journey can prompt many feelings – frustration, pain, sadness, compassion, hope, pride… and gratitude to those who have journeyed with us along the way. I’ve been really moved by some of the expressions of thanks I’ve received over the last few days and weeks especially, yet feel consistently inadequate in my own response. Who’s ready for Spring?

This time of year can be tiring. Wearing even. We’ve had the glitz, the festivities, the glitter, the parties… We’ve had the fun bit of winter – Christmas – and now we’re done. No season challenges our sense of hope so much as winter. In the dark and the cold, we draw on our hope that the spring will bring new life and colour.

Joy in the Mundane…

Joy in the Mundane…

So… schools are back this week after the Christmas holidays, and normal life resumes… All my life I’ve struggled with the word ‘normal’. The word was virtually taboo in the expatriate community I grew up in, being seen to be synonymous with ‘ordinary’, ‘boring’, ‘mundane’.

Wanderlust…

Wanderlust can act as a spark that keeps life exciting, the catalyst to new projects, new challenges, new adventures.
It can also be an inhibitor of future planning, of laying down roots, or developing or keeping relationships… in short, it can encourage the growth of new shoots, but can limit mature fruitfulness.

Take a seat and stay a while…

It’s the time again; that time when we stand on the brink of the year to come and take that deep breath of reflection before we jump. For some, the new year seems to stretch out them holding more of the same. For others, it holds impending change or transition. So, take a seat, and stay with me a while…

Crossing Boundaries…

Are you surrounded by people who don’t seem to ‘get’ you? Similar emotional journeys may be shared, though the particulars of the experience may differ wildly… How much can we harness empathy to connect to those around us?

A picture-postcard Christmas Eve?

A picture-postcard Christmas Eve?

I love Christmas… The nativities, the food, the music, the food, the presents, the food… you get the picture 😉 Christmas is an important time in our home… As I write this, however, I am acutely aware that for many families Christmas is not the picture postcard situation that we’d all love to have…

Christmas food around the world…

Christmas food around the world…

Growing up, Christmas-time meant brochettes and fries (at our local riverside restaurant), cinnamon rolls provided by our Canadian friend and, if we were in England at the time, iced Christmas cake 🙂 As we reach the run-up to Christmas week, what festive foods do you find yourself making? What traditions do they represent for you and yours?

“Who am I?” Thoughts on Authenticity…

“Who am I?” Thoughts on Authenticity…

“How do I figure out who I am?” This question was raised recently in a consultation session… but it joins a mighty chorus. Many people struggle with this issue at some point in their lives, but the issue of personal identity becomes more complex for many Third Culture Kids, due to the multiple cultural selves they have developed over their time abroad.
