A new year… a new TCK?
So a new year beckons, and as the saying goes: a new year, a new you. Trouble is, there are often so many ‘me’s for us Third Culture Kids already! Which one do I feel the need to ‘improve’ or ‘reinvent’? It can be giddy-making… And apparently we aren’t the only ones who think so – only one in four Brits made resolutions last new year.
Closed Doors and Welcome Mats
How many of you have had doors slammed in your faces?
Physical or metaphorical, they both hurt. Many of us have, on various occasions, opened ourselves up to a person, or a community, and offered our selves and our stories as a gift in that relationship. We have shared experiences, or memories, that are deeply ‘of us’ and have hoped for a positive response to our offering.
Travel, the Marmite effect…
Travel is a topic that very often has a type of Marmite effect. Many people love travel, in all its guises, and the experience is often held up to be an experience that truly benefits a life, opening out an individual’s worldview to encompass horizons beyond his or her own shore. Others, when they think of travel, are put off by the visas, passports, check-in times, bewildering cultural confusions and expense. It’s the Marmite effect.
How do you feel about Valentine’s Day?
Who loves Valentine’s Day? Whether single or coupled, and however much the grouches out there would decry it as abhorrent commercialism, Valentine’s Day is nevertheless an opportunity to invite a little more love into our lives, and to celebrate the love already present.
Anchored…
When we are grounded, truly secure in our Selves, in Place, then we are all the better equipped to cry ‘Anchors away!’ and set sail into the next adventure… We can explore the unknown safe in the knowledge that our anchors are intact, ready to ground us again when needed or desired… They are tools that both facilitate security and adventure.
Writer’s Block…
Life Story offers an analytical technique that clarifies one’s vision of the story that has been written so far… where we have come from… the significance of past events on the now. We work together, collaborating on your story. I re-centre you as hero of your story, and support you as you, once again, pick up your pen, and cheer you on as you meet those blank pages with less dread, and more joy and hope in the story yet to come. Triumphant Being!
I was talking to a friend recently about life events that unsettle our identities, times when ‘who I am’ gets shaken to its core. We talked about losing our sense of identity, our sense of self… how new limitations, a change in environments, and a feeling of powerlessness can all act together to make us feel increasingly invisible… a sort of faded ‘who I am’ remains, left gasping for air…
The American Nomad…
I caught sight of this documentary last week, titled ‘American Nomads’… It was an interesting, if melancholy, enquiry into America’s historical nomadism, with itinerant cowboys and wide open spaces, and its current cohort of nomads… Our great big world carries so many life stories, and being granted a glimpse of another’s history is such a privilege. Read the post to find the link, and let me know what you think…
Exploring ‘Home’
Exploring ‘home’… that’s what I’m up to this weekend. It’s often the case that the treasures of one’s ‘hometown’ go unexplored, simply due to their being on the doorstep. This weekend, however, I’m embracing the home-grown treasures of the city in which I live. It turns out that I need to nurture the spirit of adventure that so permeated my younger years… partly in response to my young daughter’s constant demand for ‘adventure’ but also for my own sake.

A friend of mine is published in the current edition of 'Among Worlds' magazine. This magazine is the only Third Culture magazine in publication, and it is managed by Interaction International. The website declares: Among Worlds fills a real need by addressing issues...
